Hay & Forage

Rabbits and guinea pigs are herbivores. Most of their diets should consist of good quality hay. Since their digestive systems need plenty of fibre, hay is an important food source. It helps grind down their growing teeth and provides essential vitamins and minerals, such as vitamins A and D, as well as protein and calcium.

There are differences between rabbits and guinea pigs when it comes to their hay consumption. While timothy hay is an excellent choice for both animals, rabbits prefer oaten hay which isn't as readily available in the UK and guinea pigs like meadow grass hay. Also, rabbits need a higher percentage of hay in their diets compared to guinea pigs.

Fresh, dust-free hay should be your pets main source of food and you should make sure they have access to it at all times. It also allows foraging and grazing, which are important natural behaviours.
